True devotion

Once Narada said to God Vishnu, “God, your all devotees are calling you down to Earth. Why are you not going there and blessing them?”

God laughed and said, “Narada, you are so innocent. How do you know that they are my real devotees? Come along and I will show my one true devotee.”

God stood five miles away from that group of people and told Narada to tell them that Lord Vishnu was standing five miles from them and that the time has come for them to finally get the vision of the Lord.

When they heard this piece of news, half the devotees believed and went in the direction. When the devotees had covered just a mile, Lord Vishnu rained on them a shower of silver coins. As they got busy in picking up the coins, Narada requested them to go on with their journey, and this time too, half of the people heed his words and carried on with their journey to see the Lord Vishnu.

And this time a shower of gold coins hit the group. They again started to pick up the coins saying, “Those who stopped to pick of the silver coins were unfortunate, but we are lucky as we have these gold coins and can now spend our life nicely.”

Again Narada requested them to go on, but only half the devotees went with him. This time around, Lord Vishnu caused a shower of precious stones — rubies, emeralds and diamonds. The devotees then started collecting these precious stones and when Narada told them to move on, only one person went ahead.

In the end only this devotee received blessings from Lord Vishnu.

Then Lord Vishnu said to Narada, “See Narada, I told you there is only one true devotee who prays to me from the heart.”
