Wilde wit on stage
KATHMANDU: Satire on the snobbishness of the upper class, greed for money and pompous individuals of Victorian Britain is what The Importance of Being Earnest is all about. And now theatre lovers in the Capital will get a chance to enjoy this comedy on stage, which will be performed by The New Shakespeare Wallahs, at the British Embassy on March 18, 19 and 21.
At a press meet organised on March 16, Greta Rana, director of the theatre company and also the play’s director, said, “One of the famous comedies of British playwright Oscar Wilde, it contains his subtle wit and irony. It also tells the history of Victorian Britain.”
She added, “Much in this comedy is pertinent to the present situation of Nepal where push and pull between families for money exist.”
Pratima Pande, president of the Nepal Britain Society(NBS), shared, “It is a part of the annual programme of our society to foster friendship and cultural ties between Nepal and Britain.”
A few actors enacted some scenes from the play. Professionals like doctors, scientist and diplomats among others are acting in the play.
The New Shakespeare Wallahs have been working as a theatre group of NBS for the last 10 years and have been staging plays every year. “As usual the profits from this play will go towards charitable causes especially towards the education sector,” said Rana.
