Women embracing responsibility
Kathmandu:
Nepal Institute for Development Studies (NIDS) has yet another publication on women’s empowerment. But ‘I am the Household Head Now’ discusses the role of a woman in decision-making and organising work in absence of their men.
The book, which is an outcome of a research in a mid-hill village analyses the gender relation, men and women’s role in decision making, and changing social dynamics due to out-migration, which according to the book is a highly gendered process.
‘Besides the gendered participation in decision-making in specific fields of decisions, a more basic gender division was detected: during migration, women take on responsibility for operational decisions whereas strategic decisions were further on made by both spouses joi-ntly or by the husband al-one,’ concludes the book.
