Kathmandu Valley among high-risk areas as heavy rainfall is forecast across several provinces.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has warned of possible flash floods in small rivers across several parts of the country over the next three days as monsoon activity intensifies.

The department said small rivers in Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Saptari, Sunsari, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun, Makawanpur, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Chitwan, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West, Palpa, Kaski, Parbat, Myagdi, Syangja, Kailali and surrounding districts are at risk of sudden flooding.

DHM hydrologist Binod Parajuli said Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavrepalanchok and adjoining districts are also at high risk of flash floods.

The department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in many parts of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces on Monday, with isolated rainfall also likely in Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Heavy rainfall is expected at a few places in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, while isolated heavy showers are also likely in parts of the Tarai, including Madhesh Province.

During the night, moderate to heavy rain is forecast to continue in the Himalayan, hilly and Tarai regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, with isolated rainfall expected in Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The department has urged residents living near rivers and streams, as well as travellers, to remain alert as intense rainfall could trigger flash floods and inundation in vulnerable areas.
