Kathmandu, January 26

Authorities have asked people to stay alert and take precautions amid the foggy weather condition, especially in the Tarai, that is l likely to continue in the country for the next few days.

The southern plain has been witnessing a thick layer of fog till late morning for the past few days.

Today, the Meteorological Forecast Division issued a special bulletin calling all transportation business, including airline operators to take extra precaution while conducting regular services.

The MFD also asked the people to keep themselves warm and not to breathe in the open area for long especially if the air is too cold due to the fog.

The westerly low pressure system built throughout the country in the past few days has started showing impact on the country of late. Although, Kathmandu valley's sky is seemingly visible during day time, the sky over most of the country is partly to generally visible. The valley will also see similar weather condition in the coming days with the mercury further dropping.

The weather will be partly to generally cloudy in Gandaki Province, generally cloudy in Madhes Province, Bagmati Province, and Lumbini Province and generally fair in other provinces, according to the MFD. Likewise, Province 1 and Madhes Province will see generally cloudy weather.

The MFD said the temperature would further plummet in the coming days due to cloudy weather system.

Currently, only mountainous districts are seeing temperature at zero or below zero degree Celsius (-4.5 degrees Celsius in Jomsom and -3.7 degrees Celsius in Jumla).

These districts also witnessed heavy snowfall a few days ago. The minimum temperature in the districts of the southern plain is still high with the highest minimum temperature at 15 degrees Celsius in Bhairahawa and lowest minimum temperature at 8.5 degree Celsius in Morang. Likewise, Dhangadi and Nepalgunj recorded the highest temperature at 26 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists said this year's temperature was slightly higher compared to last year. "But once the winter rain occurs, the temperature will drastically fall once again. Only after rainfall, will there will be onset of summer in the country."
