KATHMANDU, APRIL 24
On Earth Day 2024, Intrepid DMC Nepal office team, known for their adventurous spirit, successfully organized its second cleanup drive-in collaboration with Clean up Nepal, on Tuesday.
Issuing a press release today, the Intrepid DMC Nepal said that On 22 April 2024, the team embarked on a hike with a purpose along "Pani Muhan – Nagi Gompa" trail inside the picturesque Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The outcome was impressive as our dedicated team worked tirelessly and managed to gather approximately 30.52 kgs of non-biodegradable waste, leaving behind a cleaner and more pristine trail.
The collected waste comprised of 156 pieces of plastic bottles weighing 6.3 kgs, 19.86 kgs of plastic wrappers and 4.36 kgs of other wastes. Additionally, the event also raised awareness among the local hikers inside the park about the adverse impacts of littering and encouraged them to bring their trash back with them for proper disposal, it said.
Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, established in 2002, lies in the northern fringes of Kathmandu Valley and spans four districts, covering an area of 159 square–kilometers. It plays a vital role in conserving the Valley's – and surrounding area's – biodiversity while also acting as a water catchment area, fulfilling the population's water prerequisites.
Being a green respite from urban Kathmandu's hustle and bustle, the National Park attracts a large number of hikers and picnickers every week, resulting in a lot of material being taken inside but very little trash brought out. Therefore, while collecting 30.52 kilograms of waste is an endeavor that we are proud of, it is also a stark reminder that awareness is lacking in a large percentage of people who visit the National Park for recreational or other purposes, the intrepid added.
"We aim to organize cleanup and awareness drives like this on a regular basis in order to not only focus on cleaning up particular venues but also on educating visitors about the importance of environment preservation. With such initiatives, we hope to instill a sense of responsibility and encourage visitors to adopt sustainable practices," Ashish Verma, General Manager Nepal of Intrepid Travel said.
