Nepal is set for another day of contrasting weather, with heavy rain forecast in parts of the hills and Terai even as temperatures in several southern cities are expected to climb to 36°C.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division said moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely across large parts of the country on Thursday, with heavy rainfall possible at one or two places in the hilly areas and Terai of Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

Moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected at many places in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim, while parts of the Terai in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim are also likely to receive rain.

Among major cities, Simara and Nepalgunj are forecast to record the day's highest temperatures of 34–36°C. Dhangadi and Dipayal could reach 33–35°C, while Biratnagar, Dharan and Janakpur are forecast at 33–35°C.

Kathmandu is expected to remain comparatively cooler, with temperatures ranging from 27–29°C and a 40 per cent chance of rain during the day.

The weather office said moderate rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is also possible in some Himalayan areas.

Overnight, generally cloudy conditions will continue across the country, with heavy rainfall possible at one or two places in the Himalayan and hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces.

The entire country remains under the influence of monsoon winds, with the monsoon low-pressure line slightly north of its average position in the western region and around its normal position in the east.
