Nepal is set for a sharp mix of near 40°C heat and heavy monsoon rain on Thursday, with temperatures forecast to reach 40°C in Janakpur even as several provinces brace for heavy downpours.
The Meteorological Forecasting Division said Janakpur could record a maximum of 38–40°C, while Dhangadi could reach 37–39°C. Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa and Biratnagar are also expected to see temperatures of up to 38°C.
At the same time, heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Gandaki, including the Himalayan and hilly regions, as well as in parts of Bagmati, Koshi and Lumbini provinces. Pokhara is forecast to receive heavy rain with thunderstorms, with a 40% chance of rain during the day and 60% at night.
The weather is expected to become wetter in several areas overnight. Very heavy rainfall is likely in one or two places in the Himalayan and hilly regions of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while heavy rain is forecast in parts of Bagmati, Koshi, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali.
Kathmandu is forecast to remain cloudy with moderate rain and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from 31–33°C during the day and 21–23°C at night. The probability of rain is 60% during the day and rises to 70% tonight.
Moderate rain or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected across most Himalayan and hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. Parts of Madhesh and the Terai regions of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini are also likely to receive moderate rain with thunderstorms.
