KATHMANDU, JUNE 18

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has predicted rain and thunderstorms in several hilly and mountainous districts today, even as sweltering temperatures and hot day conditions continue across large parts of the Tarai, with mercury likely to reach as high as 41 degrees Celsius in some areas.

According to the Division, hilly and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces are likely to witness moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning at a few places. Isolated rainfall is also expected in the hilly and Himalayan areas of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces.

The Tarai regions of Koshi and Madhesh provinces may receive light to moderate rain at one or two places, while most of the Tarai in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces is expected to remain mainly fair.

The weather system is currently under the partial influence of an upper-atmosphere western trough, local winds and easterly winds.

The Division has warned of hot day conditions in parts of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces and in several areas of the Tarai in Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Temperatures are expected to soar to 39-41 degrees Celsius in Nepalgunj and 38-40 degrees Celsius in Dhangadi and Bhairahawa.

Kathmandu is likely to experience light rain and thunderstorms with temperatures ranging between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius, while Pokhara and parts of Koshi Province, including Biratnagar and Taplejung, are expected to receive moderate rainfall.

Tonight, generally cloudy conditions are forecast in Koshi Province, with continued chances of rain and thunderstorms in its hilly, Himalayan and some Tarai areas, while the rest of the country is likely to remain partly cloudy to mainly fair.
