Cold wave disrupts classes; fog blankets southern plains

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 7

Gauriganga Municipality in Kailali has announced a week-long closure of schools to protect students from the impact of a severe cold wave.

Municipal officials said the decision was taken as falling temperatures, thick fog and haze have disrupted teaching and learning activities. The closure will come into effect from Wednesday.

The cold wave has affected daily life across the southern plains of Sudurpaschim, while winter crops have also suffered, locals said. Earlier, Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City and Gauriganga Municipality distributed firewood to vulnerable households to help them cope with the cold.

Several schools across the country have been temporarily closed due to similar weather conditions.
