INARUWA, APRIL 1

Bird flu infection has been detected in poultry farms across various local levels in Sunsari district, prompting authorities to cull thousands of birds as a containment measure.

According to Dr. Manoj Kumar Mahato, chief of the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Expert Centre, Inaruwa, the infection has been spreading in multiple poultry farms, including those in the district headquarters Inaruwa.

Bird flu was confirmed in broiler chickens raised by Suman Kumar Rai at Kusumgachi in Inaruwa Municipality–2. Similarly, infection was also detected in local chickens and ducks raised by Suman Govinda Shrestha in Itahari–16, Dr. Mahato said.

He added that samples collected from various farms were tested, and the disease was confirmed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory, following which control measures have been intensified.

To prevent further spread, high alert has been maintained in areas surrounding affected farms, while monitoring of other poultry farms has been tightened. Farmers have been urged to immediately report any abnormal symptoms in poultry and to minimize external contact to protect their flocks.

According to officials, a total of 19,365 poultry birds have been culled so far from 14 suspected farms in the district as part of containment efforts.
