People of any age can go for braces
Dr. Dilip Das
My friend has lovely white teeth, but she is a bit conscious as she has a gap in between her front upper teeth and they also jut out a little. She tried braces a long time ago but as it was very painful, she opted out. Can she try braces again? We are in our late 20’s — is it too late for her to put braces? Otherwise what should she try to do? — Bikash
People of any age can benefit from orthodontic treatment. Teeth that are crooked, crowded, or that stick out affect the way teeth looks as well as works. Orthodontic treatment not only improves the look of one’s smile, but also the condition of teeth.
Straight teeth are easier to clean and less likely to decay or injure.
Teeth that jut out are easily chipped or broken.
Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for teens, as teeth can be moved at any age. In fact, more and more adults are having orthodontic treatment to improve the look of their smile.
Dentist or an orthodontist can evaluate if orthodontic treatment is right for your friend. Orthodontic treatment takes time. The amount of time depends on age, the seriousness of the problem and the technique used for the treatment.
Treatment generally involves a visit to an orthodontist on a regular basis over a period of months to years. In general, it takes longer to treat adults than children or teenagers. Most people wear braces for one to two years.
Another option is removable appliances but they are not as precise as braces, they can move a tooth or a group of teeth.
I advise your friend to visit an orthodontist for the planning of proper treatment.
