17 students held, 1 hurt

Kathmandu, January 5:

Police today arrested 17 students of the Balmeeki Vidhyapeeth while the students were trying to enter the campus by breaking the police barricade.

The police on request from the campus administration barred the students from entering the campus. One student, Laxman Panthi, sustained leg injury in scuffle with the police.

Free Students’ Union chairman Laxman Acharya, Bishnu Panthi, Netra Dahal, Nischal Adhikari, Krishna Rijal, Shiva Poudel, Laxman Panthi, Bishnu Poudyal, Dhruba Panthi, Jeev Lal Kharel, Indu Sharma, Rakesh Shrestha, Mahesh Kumar Khatiwada, Ram Krisna Lamichane, Bishnu Subedi, Birendra Sharma and Binod Sharma were among the arrested. Police arrested them after the students obstructed the road and started chanting slogans when they were barred from entering the campus. The detained students were kept at the Mahendra Police Club. The students have been demanding their right to enter the campus and the release of three student leaders who were detained on December 29.

Yesterday too, police had barred the students from entering the campus after the campus administration broke the month-long lockout of the campus office by the students.

The students had locked the campus administration office for 36 days before it was forcefully broken by the campus administration yesterday. The students had locked the campus putting forward their 27-point educational demand that includes quality education and resignation of the campus chief.
