Over 6 lakh vehicles face the music
KATHMANDU: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has subjected as many as 639,611 vehicles to legal action under differing titles in the fiscal year 2016/17.
The vehicles were penalised for haphazard parking, driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), lane violation, and noncompliance with the rule on horn ban and for shoehorning through the zebra crossings.
The highest number of vehicles — 31, 533 in overall — faced legal action for violating the lane discipline whereas 29, 080 vehicles were fined for haphazard parking.
A total of 28,896 drivers faced the music for driving under the influence of alcohol as 9,663 vehicles were fined for honking horns without necessity.
MTPD Chief and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mingmar Lama said the number of vehicles facing the legal action has shot up with the increase in the number of vehicles plying the roads. In the fiscal year 2015/16, the MTPD took action against 548,770 vehicles. The Division has stated that 11 accidents were recorded until now this year due to potholes and road depressions.
