88pc water sources in Bhaktapur polluted

BHAKTAPUR: Coliform bacteria are found in 88 per cent of the water sources in Bhaktapur.

This information was shared at a news conference organised by the District Public Health Office here on Wednesday.

Office Chief Krishna Bahadur Chand said that water at 16 out of 18 water sources from where water is supplied to the district was found polluted. The office had conducted a test of the water samples at these sources a few days back. He said the district is at high risk of diseases due to this.

The office had carried out laboratory test of water samples from 18 sources at Changunarayan, Nangkhel and Suryavinayak. Only water at the Teendhara source in Katunje of Suryavinayak Municipality-6 and the source at Swasthyachauki, Nagarkot in Changunarayan Municipality-6 was found potable.

Water from the sources at Muhanpokhari in Nagarkot and Bode which is consumed by the people of Bhaktapur and Madhyapur Thimi municipalities is also polluted. There is no filter plant at Muhanpokhari while the one at Bode has remained dysfunctional for many years, it is stated.
