Newly-elected Speaker Devraj Ghimire is a close confidant of CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli. He was elected to the House of Representatives from Jhapa (Constituency No 2), the district Oli hails from. He is a member of the UML Standing Committee and in-charge of the Province 1 chapter of the UML.
Ghimire joined the student wing of the Communist Party of Nepal Revolutionary Coordination Committee, the mother party of the CPN-UML, in 1975.
The party was known as the coordination committee. He became its member in 1978.
Ghimire, who worked for the party in the eastern hill districts, became the UML's central committee member in 1990 when the CPN-UML was formed.
Ghimire was born on 26 May 1956 in Sirijangha Rural Municipality of Taplejung district in a lower middle class family.
He did his matriculation from Bhanu Public High School in Taplejung and passed certificate-level education from Mahendra Multiple Campus, Dharan. He did his graduation from Trichandra College, Kathmandu.
