Absconding rape convict held after 4 months

KATHMANDU: The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police has arrested an absconding rape convict from Nakhipot of Lalitpur district on Wednesday.

The then Patan Appellate Court on May 21 had sentenced Karan Kumar Pradhan  (27) from Godavari in Lalitpur district, currently residing in Lalitpur-14, with an imprisonment for three years.

He was convicted of raping a "depressed" drug-abusing woman  who was admitted in the Satyam Behaviour Rehabilitation Centre, a rehab centre that Pradhan would operate in Nakhipot of Lalitpur district, on January 4, 2014.

Upon a complaint filed by the victim with police and a subsequent case filed by the government, the Lalitpur District Court had sentenced him to three years in prison on March 15, 2014.

On May 21 this year, the then Appellate Court had reviewed the case after the convict's appeal and endorsed the lower court's sentence. The appeal court, however, had relieved the convict of the burden to pay Rs 300,000 compensation to the victim.

But, the perpetrator was fleeing since then.

Meanwhile, police presented the convict before the Lalitpur District Court for execution of the verdict today. The Court sent him to the Nakhkhu Jail.
