Actor Hamal named goodwill ambassador

KATHMANDU: The ‘Building Back Right’ campaign for responsible reconstruction was launched in the capital on Wednesday, with actor actor Rajesh Hamal as its goodwill ambassador.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bamadev Gautam, the chief guest at the event, said “This campaign is very much needed. We should be able to fulfill our promise of rebuilding the country.”

‘Building Back Right’ is a volunteer-led campaign to encourage the public, international donors and the government to rebuild in accordance with principles that support heritage, ethics and the environment as well as the highest possible safety standards.

“Buildings have to be technically sound, environmentally sound and ethically sound, and they should reflect our culture. This is an opportunity to reconstruct in an environmental friendly way too, which in itself is an education,” Hamal said.

Homraj Acharya, co-founder of the campaign, said it is the right time to be ethical and sustainable and support our heritage.

Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC said the issue should be brought to the Parliament to include it in the policy discussion. “These are very timely and important ideas to bring into the public arena,” KC said.

“These are very good ideas, but there is one component that should be added, which is making it politically right,” Ram Karki, a leader of the Unified CPN-Maoist, suggested.
