Kirtipur, July 4:
Nine student unions, including the Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus unit of the Free Students’ Union (FSU), today gave an ultimatum to the Tribhuvan University vice-chancellor, Dr Govind Prasad Sharma, demanding that he either clarify within three days for expressing his desire to shift colleges located in commercial areas, including the Trichandra campus, to Chovar or Kirtipur, or resign from the post. The students were also carrying a 10-metre banner filled with signatures of around 2,500 students seeking apologies from the vice-chancellor. Saroj Kumar Thapa, the president of the TC campus chapter of the FSU, addressing a corner meet on the TU campus premises, said the ‘educational mafia’ was involved in the bid to shift the Trichandra campus to Chobhar. “We are addressing only the educational issues,” he said, warning that they will take to the streets if the VC doesn’t apologise. “The TU will face dire consequences if it takes decisions at the cost of students’ welfare,” said Thapa. The signature campaign was launched on July 1 after Dr Sharma said that colleges located in commercial areas should be shifted to Kirtipur or Chovar and malls should be constructed in the vacated plots.
