KATHMANDU, JUNE 4

Minister for Home Affairs, Ramesh Lekhak, has directed Nepal Police to remain prepared for disaster risk reduction and management.

During a visit to the Disaster Management Office of Nepal Police in Samakhusi on Wednesday, Minister Lekhak stated, "Disasters can occur at any time. While monsoon-related disasters can be predicted to some extent, incidents like earthquakes and fires are largely unpredictable. With the monsoon approaching, we must stay prepared."

Highlighting that disaster management responsibilities are legally assigned to Nepal Police, he emphasized the need for round-the-clock readiness. "The law clearly mandates Nepal Police to handle disaster risk reduction and management. Given the police's extensive grassroots presence, public expectations are growing. The people are placing their trust in the police, and we must serve with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment," the Minister said.

He further underscored the need for readiness in light of the high risk of floods, landslides, and inundation during the monsoon, which is forecast to become active from June 11.

Minister Lekhak also informed that discussions on amending the Nepal Police Act will soon commence at the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the Federal Parliament.
