Big hotels fail to pay taxes

KATHMANDU: Many big hotels including some five-star ones in Kathmandu Metropolitan City have been found to have not paid vehicle and housing taxes.

Though many of them have deposited business tax after the KMC initiated action against the defaulters, many are yet to submit vehicle and housing taxes, according to KMC Revenue Division Chief Mahesh Kafley.

Hotel Hyatt, Hotel Everest, Hotel Radisson, Hotel Shanker, Hotel Shangrila, Hotel Malla and Hotel Yak and Yeti have not yet paid vehicle and housing taxes since a long ago. They, however, have paid the business tax.

Only the Hotel Soaltee has submitted all kinds of taxes it was liable to following the recent action initiated by the KMC. Likewise, Hotel de l' Annapurna has paid all taxes except vehicle tax.

A five-star hotel usually pays between Rs. 1 to 1.2 million annually in such taxes.

The KMC is preparing to initiate action against the defaulters as per the Local Self-Governance Act, 1999, Kafley added.
