British MPs call on CA members

Kathmandu, February 17:

A delegation of British parliamentarians today expressed concerns about the process of writing a new constitution in Nepal.

They expressed their concerns during meetings with Constituent Assembly chairman Subas Nembang and CA members.

During the meetings, they said that they would make attempts for maximum international support for the constitution writing process. They suggested political parties to follow the path of consensus and address the issues of women, Dalits, indigenous and marginalised people through the constitution.

CA members including Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, Dr Minendra Rijal and Nabindra Raj Joshi briefed the British parliamentarians on the challenges to constitution writing process, army integration and bringing the armed Tarai groups to the mainstream.

The delegation led by John Stanley asked CA chairman Nembang on how the CA would process the opinions collected from the people on the constitution.

Meanwhile, RSS reported that the delegates met with former prime minister and Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala this morning.

During the meeting, Nepal’s peace process, constitution-writing process and other issues of mutual interests were discussed.

According to party’s foreign department member Dr Suresh Raj Chalise, the British team recalled Britain’s help in drafting Nepal’s constitution in 1958.

The delegates told Koirala that the team was here with wishes for the success of Nepal’s parliament, constitution-writing and democracy.

On the occasion, Koirala told that the Nepali Congress’ first priority was to draft a new constitution on time. He thanked the team for its concerns and wishes for constitution writing and Nepal’s democracy.

Koirala said he was committed to take the peace process to a logical conclusion and institutionalise democracy.
