Broader meet on border issues soon

Kathmandu, December 12:

The parliamentary International Relations Committee today decided to call a “broad and comprehensive” meeting of senior leaders of political parties, the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Foreign Minister and experts on border issues to address the border problems with India once and for all. “This (border) issue has to be addressed permanently now,” MP Jhalanath Khanal said.

He suggested “uniformity” in the country’s foreign policy by discussing and reviewing it, as a change in foreign policy with a change in government leadership will work no more.

MPs sought information on border encroachment in Susta. “We cannot surrender to anyone in the name of diplomacy,” Maoist MP Janardhan Sharma said.

Foreign Minister Sahana Pradhan said she had a meeting with Indian Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi recently on the border issue. “We discussed on the issue and he (Mukherjee) said he would look into the matter.”

A government team is returning to Kathmandu on Friday after a study of Susta area, Minister Pradhan said.
