KATHMANDU, JULY 28

Minister of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens Uma Regmi has said families and local governments have been made responsible for senior citizens.

In her response to queries raised during deliberations on a proposal seeking consideration for the amendment by the House of Representatives regarding the Senior Citizens (First Amendment) Bill, 2018 here today, Minister Regmi said such provision was expected to provide significant contribution to the protection of the rights of senior citizens.

She was speaking at a session of the National Assembly, the Upper House, today.

The Bill to amend the Senior Citizens Act, 2006 was endorsed by the HoR and sent to the National Assembly.

Speaking at a session of the National Assembly today, Minister Regmi said there were reports that senior citizens had been subjugated to abuse and violence at the hands of their children.

"Ageing population is living without their children in villages as the latter are opting for urban life. Senior citizens have been left alone in villages due to the increasing trend of outmigration of their children."

"The respective local government has been made accountable to work for the welfare of senior citizens who are neglected by their children. We have several instances of even educated children leaving their parents at old-age homes. The Bill aims to ensure happy life for senior citizens with their families," the minister said.
