KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 5

Adviser of Veterinary Public Health Association Nepal Shital Kaji Shrestha said that one health approach - the approach that seeks integrated solution to human and animal health and environmental concerns - should also be expanded to the public level. "One health approach has been the focus of the government and the World Health Organisation for the last one decade. Still, many other stakeholders are not adequately informed about the approach," Shrestha said. He said his organisation named Veterari Public Health Association, Nepal had organised a conference of experts in Kathmandu with the aim of making health professionals and public aware about one health approach.

A total of 80 public health veterinarians from 14 Indian states and 70 veterinarians from Nepal gathered for the two-day joint international conference organised under the theme 'Role of public health veterinarians to achieve health security through one health approach.' Deputy Prime Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha presided over the function as chief guest. In the first ever conclave of its kind, 76 scientific papers was presented.

The conference was also conglomerated with 15th Biennial Conference of Association of Public Health Veterinarians, India. Life time achievement award was handed to Late Durga Dutta Joshi from Nepal and to Prof Nitya Nand Pathak from India.

President of Veterinary Public Health Association Nepal Mukul Upadhyaya, office bearers from Indian side Prof N R Pradhan, Prof Tapan Kumar Mandal, Prof A K Pramanik, Dean of Bihar Veterinary College JK Prasad and Prof Rashmi Singh from DUVASU Mathura also attended the programme.

Papers on public health were presented from WHO Nepal and Nepali veterinary institutes. On the occasion, various scientist from India and Nepal were awarded by Association of Public Health Veterinarians, India.
