KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 28
On Saturday morning, Chaniklal Tamang of Kavre Temal came out with his wife and daughter to see the severe flooding in Nakkhu Khola, Lalitpur, caused by two days of relentless rain.
People in that area were moving their belongings. They also assisted in the transportation of local goods. At that point, the river's water level began to rise. Raju Sah, 43, his 6-year-old daughter Meghna Sah, Raju's brother Raj Sah, 22, and Raju's 4-year-old daughter Shertu Sah, all of whom lived in Sugam Basti Tole, had climbed to the roof to save their lives.
In no time, the water level had reached the roof, washing away four of them. Tamang was wandering around Nakhkhukhola. It must have been around 8 a.m. when his wife pointed to the man being washed away from the river and yelled at Tamang, saying people were being swept away.
He jumped into Nakkhu the moment Chaniklal's wife's voice reached his ears.
Nakkhukhola was raging. The bridge was overflowing. Chaniklal jumped into the river which had swept away the houses along the river and caught up to the person being swept away.
"The flood was tremendously powerful. However, in two attempts, I was able to hold the hand of the person being swept away. One man had grabbed the child strongly," he says in a video shared on multiple social media platforms.
According to him, the girl had consumed a lot of water. Other people gathered there assisted in expelling the water by pressing on the stomach. "When the girl was revived, she shouted, 'Where is my father?'" Tamang added.
From where he rescued two people, the flood swept away four people from a zinc-roofed house 500 metres above. One girl is missing from the group of four. Another person rescued from the flood is the girl's father.
During the rescue, former Nepal Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ashok Singh also arrived. Singh arrived shortly after Chaniklal had rescued the two. Singh first drove to the nearest Medicity Hospital. However, the road was closed due to flooding. After that, he was taken to Patan Hospital.
Singh stated, "They were admitted to the emergency room and are currently being treated. We have now learnt that they are not in danger."
In this way, Chaniklal saved two of the four people who were being washed away by the flood. Another individual was discovered to have swum out by himself. SSP Shekhar Khanal of District Police Complex Lalitpur, on the other hand, stated that three people who were reportedly swept away by the river have been rescued and are now being treated at Patan Hospital.
Raju's brother, 22-year-old Raj Sah, survived by swimming. Raj's four-year-old daughter, Shertu Sah, has gone missing.
