The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority received as many as 11,769 complaints related to corruption and financial irregularities in the fiscal 2017-18.

According to details made public by the anti-graft body as per the Right to Information Act and Rules, it received a total of 19,488 complaints in 2017-18, out of which 7,719 were carried forward from the previous fiscal 2016-17.

“We received 11,769 new complaints in 2017-18 and carried forward 7,719 complaints from the previous fiscal, totalling 19,488,” the details read.

The CIAA said it settled 12,400 complaints and the success rate was 63.6 per cent. The number of outstanding complaints is 7,088. It had adopted preventive, promotional and punitive measures for corruption control in the country. As part of the anti-graft body’s punitive action, as many as 192 corruption cases were filed against 434 persons at the Special Court, claiming around Rs 10.58 billion in question.

Similarly, the CIAA was successful in its sting operation against bribery. It arrested 156 persons while receiving bribe from service-seekers and filed as many charge-sheets against them at the court. Around Rs 10.5 million in question has been claimed from the defendants.

Those arrested with bribe included a joint secretary, five under secretaries, a district education officer, director of Nardevi Ayurvedic Hospital, 15 section officers, an assistant manager of Rastriya Banijya Bank, a deputy superintendent of police, two inspectors, two sub-inspectors, three assistant sub-inspectors, two head constables, nine constables, 30 non-gazetted first class officers and two surveyors, among others.

Similarly, the anti-graft body filed charge-sheets against 10 persons holding public post at the court on charge of amassing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. Around Rs 9.77 million has been claimed from them. The overall performance achievement of the anti-graft body in 2016-17 was about 60 per cent.
