KATHMANDU, MAY 27
President Ramchandra Paudel has stressed the need for sustainable mountain tourism, responsible mountaineering and conservation of the Himalayan environment.
Addressing the 'Sagarmatha Summiters Summit–2026' organised in Kathmandu on Tuesday, President Paudel said preserving the Himalayan ecosystem has become increasingly important amid the growing impacts of climate change.
"Mount Everest is not only Nepal's geographical identity but also the pride and invaluable natural heritage of the country," he said, adding that tourism has significantly contributed to the national economy through the conservation and promotion of the Himalayas.
The President expressed concern over issues including global warming, climate change and increasing garbage accumulation in mountain regions, stating that greater efforts and cooperation are needed to ensure safe and sustainable mountaineering.
He said the summit was significant in bringing together Everest climbers from around the world to discuss international cooperation and awareness for Himalayan conservation.
Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Mukunda Prasad Niraula said the summit would help promote Nepal's tourism sector and highlighted the growing impact of climate change on the country's mountains, including Mt Everest.
