Constitutional Council recommends Parajuli as Chief Justice

KATHMANDU: The  meeting of the Constitutional Council held on Thursday recommended Acting Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli to the post of the Chief Justice.

The post of the Chief Justice has been lying vacant after the retirement of  CJ Sushila Karki on June 7, 2017.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba proposed Acting CJ Parajuli to the post of CJ. Then, the meeting unanimously recommended Parajuli to the post, according to Deputy Speaker Ganga Prasad Yadav.

As per the constitutional provision, Parajuli would face the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee. He would be appointed as CJ after the Committee approves his name.

As per the Article 284 of the Constitution of Nepal, the Constitutional Council recommends the name of chiefs and members of the constitutional bodies.

The Constitutional Council consists of the Prime Minister as the chair while Chief Justice, Speaker, Chairman of the National Assembly, leader of the opposition party in the Legislature-Parliament and Deputy Speaker of the Legislature-Parliament as the members.
