Consumer rights activist nabbed for fraud
KATHMANDU: Police on Tuesday arrested a consumer rights activist for allegedly defrauding a trader of Rs 100,000.
The Metropolitan Police Crime Division said Roshan Pokharel (44), a central member of the Bhrikutimandap-based Consumers' Forum Nepal was arrested while taking Rs 100,000 cash from Dipendra Sagar, a salesman at the Nepal Overseas Marketing Company.
The MPCD in a statement said today that Pokharel had told the Khichapokhari-based marketing company that the company did not rightly put labels on packaging of some Johnson & Johnson consumer products which it was selling.
He also threatened that he would hold a raid at the company, but later assured the company operator Pawan Agrawal that he would spare the company from the action if he was given Rs 300,000 cash.
Agrawal and Pokharel had agreed that the latter would be given a third of the agreed amount yesterday.
But, police were tipped-off about the agreement and they nabbed Pokharel while he was receiving the money from his office at Bhrikutimandap.
