Cop kidnapped, handed over to police

Kathmandu, November 15:

A group of Maoists today kidnapped an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Ram Bahadur Karki from Sukedhara, beat up him severely and finally handed over him to Sanepa Police Station, police said.

Karki was coming to the Sukedhara police office after arresting two persons when a gang of armed Maoists came and took him away in a taxi to the Maoist Public Contact Office at Kupondole. Karki was with a police constable who fled the scene.

Acting on a tip-off from locals that two armed groups are fighting at Sukedhara, Karki went to the spot and arrested Dilman Nemwang and Dil Bahadur Rai with khukuris from a micro-bus in cooperation with locals.

The duo are currently kept at Gaushala Ward Police Station.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 in the morning. The Maoists charged Karki of arresting “their cadres”.

Dhak Bahadur Karki, Superintendent of Police at the Kathmandu District Police Office, Haumandhoka said the Maoists severely beat up Karki on his feet. He has been admitted to the Birendra Police Hospital at Maharajgunj. The Maoists handed him over to the Sanepa Ward Police Station at around 3:30 pm.

SP Karki, however, said it was still unclear whether Ram Bahadur arrested the duo or they were arrested while police was chasing the taxi on which Ram Bahadur was being taken by the Maoists.

“Everything will be clear after Ram Bahadur is able to speak. We will definitely take action against the arrested Maoists,” he added.
