CTEVT staff protest formation of exam panel

Kathmandu, October 13:

A group of employees of the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT), an autonomous body, met officials of the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) today and protested the move taken by the MoES to form a five-member examination committee to publish results of entrance tests for diploma courses of the CTEVT.

The Ministry officials assured that results will not be published till the Bill on Nepal Act to Amend Some Issues on Education and Sports is passed. Education Minister Mangal Siddihi Manandhar had formed the committee headed by Ramesh Poudel, director of the CTEVT examination department, on September 18. “The publication of results of entrance examinations will give rise to legal hassles in the long run,” claimed a director of a division at the CTEVT, requesting anonymity. At least 6,000 students sat for the entrance tests.

Laba Prasad Tripathee, spokesperson for the Education Ministry, said copies of the entrance examinations were collected, but they have not been checked yet. “The government is working to make the CTEVT fully functional by solving its problems,” he said. He said the answer sheets were collected for security reasons.
