Damages sought for PY Campus
Kathmandu, December 3:
The Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) today demanded compensation from the government for the loss of property of the Public Youth Campus (PYC) allegedly damaged by the All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) on November 29.
NSU and ANNISU-R - the student wings of the Nepali Congress and the CPN-Maoist - clashed over organising a welcome programme for the freshers.
Addressing a protest meet organised at the campus premises, Rajan Tripathee, NSU unit president of PYC, said that the government should take responsibility for taking action against the guilty. “The government should compensate for the damage caused to the campus property and bear medical expenses of those undergoing treatment,” said Tripathee, adding: “Unless the government compensates for the loss of property, the lockout of the campus will continue.” The NSU organised a protest meet at the campus premises against the attack on students and employees of the campus.
Thirty-nine persons, including students, employees and teachers, were injured, while nine motorcycles parked on the college premises were set ablaze by the agitating students.
Condemning the ANNISU-R for the attack, NSU president Mahendra Sharma said the pro-Maoist students should apologise for attack.
Student leader Gagan Kumar Thapa criticised NSU central committee “for not being able to retaliate against the ANNISU-R”.
