Delay likely in NC convention: Sushil

KATHMANDU: Acting president of Nepali Congress (NC) Sushil Koirala on Monday said the party would soon fix the date of its general convention.

Koirala, however, said his party was not prepared to hold the general convention on the stipulated time due to several reasons. "It will be postponed by two or three months," Koirala said, before leaving for the USA for health check up. He also said the central committee meeting would fix the date soon after his return.

As per the schedule, the party will have to hold its general convention within mid-September. He also said the transfer of leadership in the party to second generation had begun from the recently held Parliamentary Party (PP) elections. "Now, even the third generation leaders can vie for party leadership in the general convention," he added.

Koirala will return home after about two weeks. He also asked all party leaders and activists to take the PP election as a simple process and underscored the need to end the House stalemate by holding discussions with the Unified CPN-Maoist and other parties.

Earlier, during the central committee meeting, central committee members demanded the party leadership to expedite the preparations for the general convention, according to party leader Narahari Acharya.

The meeting urged the UPCN-M not to repeat unlawful activities. It also seriously drew the government attention to resolve the border disputes with India through diplomatic channel. The meeting also demanded the implementation of the report of judicial committee on the incidents in Surkhet and other districts last year.
