Deuba defends army, police mobilised during armed conflict

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba said personnel of Nepal Army and Nepal Police just discharged their duties in line with the state's policies, rules and regulations during the armed conflict.

At a discussion programme organised by the Human Rights Organisation of Nepal (HURON) on 'Conflict Resolution and Justice' here on Friday, leader Deuba said, "However, those found guilty of crime shall be brought to book."

"Maoist combatants fought for political gain," Deuba added.

Speaking at the same function, CPN Maoist Centre leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha suggested that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission should work to help mitigate insurgency-era cases and maintain peace in the country.

Present at the programme were Chairperson of the Conflict Victims National Society and Nepali Congress leader Kul Bahadur Gurung and Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearance Lokendra Mallik, Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Surya Kiran Gurung and Chairperson of HURON Indra Aryal among others.
