Kathmandu, May 14:
Nepal is one of the first country in the SAARC region to promulgate law related with welfare of disabled people but no progress has been made in this regard.
This opinion was expressed by the speakers of a programme on Disabled Protection and Welfare Act 1983 organised here today.
Babu Krishna Maharjan, a visually impaired said, “We are living in pathetic condition in our country, neither government nor any NGOs are concerned about our problems we have to face.”
Maharjan had earlier moved the Supreme Court (SC) against the government seeking implementation of the Act and the court on January 18 issued a verdict in the favour of the physically challenged ordering the government to allocate budget for the people with disability .
Renu Lohani, officer at the Danish Council of Organisations of Disabled People, said that the people with disability would have to struggle to press the government for implementation of the Act.
