Don't sell relief foods, NHRC tells government

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission on Monday urged the government not to sell rice grains donated by various agencies meant for earthquake survivors.

Expressing its concern over some news reports that had claimed the government was selling rice meant for the survivors, the constitutional human rights body today wrote to the concerned ministries and sought details about the reports.

In the letter, the NHRC said such activities would deprive the survivors of relief goods while give a wrong impression to the donors, according the NHRC spokesperson Mohna Ansari.

"In the Commission's monitoring, it has been found that many quake survivors were still living a hard life for want of food," the NHRC statement read.

The human rights body urged the government to immediately manage distribution of relief goods among the quake-hit people.
