Dr Govinda KC says will continue hunger strike
Kathmandu, January 11
Senior orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Dr Govinda KC said Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli was not eligible to hold the position of chief justice after the court ordered to procure copies of his two citizenship certificates, Judicial Council’s decision on his age controversy and copies of his academic certificates.
The SC also ordered to procure its verdict on a writ petition filed by Dr Shashi Sharma during the hearing of contempt of court charge against Dr KC yesterday.
Releasing a press statement today, Dr KC said, “We cannot expect a fair verdict until Parajuli continues to hold the CJ’s post. My fast-unto-death protest will continue until the demands we have raised aren’t met,” Dr KC said.
Similarly, in a protest programme held in support of Dr KC here today, participants demanded immediate resignation of CJ Parajuli. “The chief justice should resign on moral grounds. The court should file cases against corrupt people. Dr KC isn’t alone, there are millions of people standing by his side,” said Krishna Sharma, one of the leaders of Naya Shakti Party-Nepal.
Hundreds of participants assembled to show their solidarity with Dr KC and chanted slogans against medical mafias and the chief justice.
Lawyer Om Prakash Aryal accused former prime minister KP Sharma Oli of protecting criminals. “Oli has become a leader of criminals and is trying to usurp our achievements. Our movement will now be targeted against him. We have his track record since 1971.”
Dr Abhishek Raj Singh, one of the members of Dr KC’s team, suggested Oli to come and hold discussions. “We need someone to criticise us. We can’t move ahead if there’s no one to criticise us. If you come and hold discussions with us, we will give advice you how reforms can be made in society,” said Dr Singh.
Dr KC has been on his 14th fast-unto-death protest since January 8 demanding resignation of Chief Justice Parajuli.
