Dr KC threatens fresh hunger strike

Kathmandu, March 30

Dr Govinda KC, a senior orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, has threatened to launch a fresh hunger strike if the government fails to pass the National Medical Education Ordinance.

Issuing a press release today, Dr KC demanded that the medical education ordinance be passed from the Parliament immediately. He has put forth a four-point demand.

His demands include making public the report submitted by Medical Education Probe Committee, punishing people involved in irregularities in the medical field, return of the rights of Institute of Medicine and giving it autonomy and uniform fee structure for masters in medical education in all TU affiliated private medical colleges.

“We have been fighting to end irregularities in the medical field for the last five years. We have been informed that the medical education ordinance has been registered in the Parliament. If we do not act now, there are chances that the quality of medical education and health services will degrade. Hence, we urge the government to fulfil the demands by April 13, else we will start hunger strike,” read the press release.
