Dr KC demands immediate passage of medical education ordinance

Kathmandu, May 3

Dr Govinda KC, senior orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, has demanded immediate passage and implementation of the medical education ordinance.

At a press meet held here today, Dr KC put forth a four-point demand and threatened to launch fresh hunger strike if his demands are not met .

As per the constitution, the ordinance should be endorsed by both the houses of the Parliament. If the joint meeting of the Parliament passes the ordinance, then it will take the form of a law. But if both the houses don’t act on the ordinance within sixty days, it would become null and void. To prevent it from becoming null and void the medical education ordinance was certified on April 26.

“We are unaware of the contents of the ordinance that was certified by the president recently as we haven’t been provided the copies. We hope the contents of the ordinance haven’t been changed,” said Dr KC.

He has also demanded that the government scrap its decision to ban demonstrations at Maitighar Mandala. Dr KC has also demanded investigation into the academic certificates of  former chief justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli and action against 43 people involved in irregularities in the medical sector as suggested by the Medical Education Probe Committee 2074.
