Newly appointed Chief Justice assumes office at Supreme Court after swearing-in
KATHMANDU, MAY 20
Newly appointed Chief Justice Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma formally assumed office on Tuesday after taking the oath of office and secrecy from President Ramchandra Paudel at Sheetal Niwas.
Soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Dr Sharma reached the Supreme Court and assumed charge as the 33rd Chief Justice of Nepal.
Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal and other senior officials attended the oath-taking ceremony.
Earlier on Tuesday, President Paudel appointed Dr Sharma as Chief Justice on the recommendation of the Constitutional Council in accordance with Article 129(2) of the Constitution. Prior to the appointment, a meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee at Singha Durbar had unanimously endorsed his nomination.
Born on June 18, 1970, in Birgunj of Parsa district, Dr Sharma was appointed a justice of the Supreme Court on April 19, 2019. He completed his BL from Nepal Law Campus, obtained an LLM from the University of Pune in India, and earned a PhD in labour law from Tribhuvan University.
Dr Sharma began his career in the judicial sector as a legal practitioner and served as an additional judge of the High Court from June 10, 2013, to December 11, 2015. His tenure as Chief Justice will continue until June 18, 2032.
