Drive to make public aware of traffic rules from Sunday
Kathmandu, December 14:
In a bid to manage traffic in the Valley, the Metropolitan Police Traffic Division is all set to launch a month-long awareness drive from December 16.
SSP Bhisma Prasai, chief at the division, said the campaign was an attempt to make all road users aware about the traffic rules.
“There has been a perceptible change in people’s attitude as they tend to break traffic rules instead of abiding by them,” he said.
He said traffic police and volunteers would be mobilised on the road to teach people about the traffic rules. “However, it is not the solution. Traffic in the Valley would be manageable only if we develop adequate infrastructure,” he said.
Of the 3,68,000 registered vehicles in Nepal, 60 per cent of them ply in the Valley.
Prasai said that his division has forwarded plan of actions on traffic management to the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management and Parliamentary committees, proposing the construction of overhead bridges, installation of traffic lights and building parking areas and flyovers at major junctions.
He has proposed the construction of 12 overhead bridges, 10 traffic lights and over six flyovers at major junctions to help manage traffic.
AIG Hem Bahadur Gurung urged the public to help make the campaign a success. Emphasising on an integrated approach in traffic management, Gurung said: “We can make a difference if we get public support in managing traffic.”
