‘EC should announce date for local polls’

Deputy Prime Minister Bimalendra Nidhi today said there would be no disputes among the parties if the Election Commission were allowed to announce the date for local election.

Speaking at a meeting of the State Affairs Committee of the Parliament, DPM Nidhi said the government was planning to entrust the EC with announcing the date for local election.

The SAC meeting was held to discuss the Bill to Amend and Integrate Laws, Duties and Powers of the EC. Expressing commitment that the government would extend maximum support to the EC, DPM Nidhi said voters’ awareness campaign being run by the commission would get continuous support from the government.

He assured that suggestions offered by lawmakers that the bill guarantee 33 per cent representation of women in all government mechanisms would be incorporated in the bill.
