EC says it will play role of watchdog

Kathmandu, August 6:

Chief election commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokhrel today said the election commission would play the role of a watchdog to ensure justice for the deprived communities.

While addressing an interaction on "Electoral process and Dalit Participation" jointly organised by Joint Dalit Struggle Committee and Dalit Civil Society, chief election commissioner Pokhrel said the EC would ensure justice for the deprived communities within the parameters of the law provided by the legislative parliament.

He said people should be made aware very soon and the election should be made a success to transform conflict into peace.

"We are in the final stage of preparation," he said, adding the training for the volunteers has already begun.

He, however, said people should be alert as parties could give candidates to people of deprived groups only at such places where they cannot win.

"It seems that even the 6.5 per cent Dalit representation may not be ensured in the Constituent Assembly," said Durga Sob president of Feminist Dalit Organisation.
