Empowerment of female journalists emphasised

Participants at a programme in Kathmandu stressed the need to empower female journalists.

Speaking at an interaction with editors and senior journalists on safety and security of women journalists yesterday, President of Federation of Nepali Journalists Mahendra Bista said incidents of gender-based discrimination in the media sector should be taken to the court.

He also said that the FNJ would help victims of such cases get justice from the court. The FNJ president called on all women journalists to speak up if they were facing any discrimination in the workplace.

Prashant Aryal, editor of Nepal magazine, stressed on qualitative growth of female journalists and underscored the need to empower female journalists rather than limiting them to a certain news beat.

Addressing the programme, Kanak Mani Dixit, a senior Journalist, said Nepal’s media sector had now entered competitive market. “Only professional journalism will empower women journalists,” Dixit said.
