Ensure women’s representation: CEC

Kathmandu, April 28:

Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokharel today urged political parties to ensure 50 per cent representation of women under the proportional electoral system.

Speaking at a programme organised by National Women Commission on “Assurance of 50 per cent representation of women under proportional electoral system in CA,” CEC Pokharel said all the political parties should abide by the laws.

On the occasion, Minister for Information and Communication Krishna Bahadur Mahara promised that his party would give 50 per cent of the total seats won under the proportional election to women.

Mahara said talks were underway regarding the nomination of 26 seats by the cabinet from among the established persons representing different walks of life.

Underlining that 50 per cent women’s involvement should be ensured in the constitution drafting process, women said no body should ignore the legal provision of 50 per cent women representation in the constituent assembly.
