Firearms licence revoked, weapons seized from various persons

KATHMANDU: Police have confiscated various authorised firearms found to be misused for terrorising commoners for personal gain in recent times, the Metropolitan Crime Division said.

Issuing a press statement on June 10, MCD said, police have revoked the arms licences of Birendra Lal Shrestha and Bal Ram Sapkota, both hailing from Kavre district, Ang Kaji Sherpa of Solukhumbu district, and Raghunath Puri of Morang district.

Earlier, the government had granted arms licences to various persons as per Article 10 of Arms and Ammunition Act, 1962.

However, the arms and ammunition were misused to terrorise people in public places, securing construction contracts, recovering illegally invested money in 'metre interest' by wielding weapons.

The four, who were under police radar, are being investigated under suspicion of civil offences.

Kathmandu District Administration Office and Lalitpur District Administration Office revoked the licensing agreement under Article 11 of Arms and Ammunition Act, 1962.

The administration resorted to action to thwart any untoward activities in the future.

Meanwhile, the seized arms and ammunition have been kept at the national treasury.
