Former Nepali Congress lawmaker and healthcare professional Dr Shakar Prasad Upreti has passed away. He was 88.

Dr Upreti breathed his last on Saturday in Kathmandu and his final rites were performed at the Pashupatinath Aryaghat on Sunday.

He was appointed a member of the National Asssembly after the fall of Panchayat regime in 1990 and has a long history of struggle for the democratic movement in Nepal.

President of the Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed his condolences over the passing away of Upreti.

Dr Upreti is the father of renowned litterateur, academic and activist Sanjeev Uprety.
