At a time when the nation is preparing for the celebration of the greatest Hindu festival of Dashain, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is having a tough time in managing city’s garbage, as the locals have not allowed it to dump garbage at Sisdole since July 30.

“We are looking for new places and dumping garbage everyday despite incessant rainfall just to avoid the risk of epidemic in the city,” said engineer Rabin Man Shakya, chief of the KMC’s Environment Department.

Shakya said KMC is facing difficulty to collect garbage due to the continuous rainfall and lack of dumping site.

“It’s an emergency everyday. It’s a very tough job to find a new place to dump such a huge amount of garbage,” he said.

General manager of the Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre (SWMRMC) under the Ministry of Local Development, Gunaraj Ghimire, said the demands of the local people are met and the ministry has initiated works for meeting their long-term demands.

He said the debate over who should represent in the Main Coordination Committee of the Okharpauwa Temporary Land Fill Site had made the problem more complicated.

“The garbage of the Valley will be dumped in Sisdole from Wednesday,” he said adding that the state should use its means if the problem is raised again.

He claimed that the people who opposed the dumping of garbage at Sisdole have been silent and the locals have criticised them for disrupting development works in their village.

Last year Rs 8 million was allocated by KMC, Lalitpur sub-metropolitan city and the SWMRMC for development works in Sisdole.

All garbage collected from KMC and Lalitpur sub-metropolitan city used to be dumped at the Sisdole temporary landfill site.
