Goodwill campaign concludes

Kathmandu, February 8

A Goodwill Campaign to promote mutual harmony and goodwill across various districts in the Tarai has come to an end.

The Campaign, with the theme ‘Dialogue and Cooperation for building Peace and Nation-Building-2016 ‘, jointly launched by Nepal Jayceesand Collective Campaign for Peace, was launched from February 3.

After taking a round of Dhangadi, Nepalgunj, Butwal, Birgunj, Janakpur, Lahan, Rajbiraj and Biratnagar, the Campaign arrived in the capital city today.

During the campaign, various consultations were held with agitating Madhesi leaders, concerned government authorities, leaders from the major opposition party Nepali Congress and civil society’s leaders in nine places across the Tarai in an attempt to seek a solution to the Tarai unrest, said COCAP President Rem Bahadur Bishwokarma.

Some Madhes-centric political parties have been agitating in various districts across the southern plains hor over five months, stating that the new constitution did not reflect their interests.

According to Bishwokarma, Madhesi communities confided with the campaigners that waging agitation in protest of the new constitution was not their choice but their compulsion.

Similarly, Jaycees President Jagat Pokharel said that the campaign aimed to bridge the growing distance between the Tarai and the hill regions.

As the Campaign has come to an end, the campaigners will now pile pressure on the political leaders to implemen the commitments to common issues made by stakeholders during the Campaign.
